Excellent Dog/Cat Sites Available On-line

Petfinder.org.  The Petfinder Network.  An on-line catalog of adoptable dogs and cats.  The site is updated on a daily basis and contains adoptable pets from shelters, rescue organizations and individuals throughout the Puget Sound Region, and throughout the U.S.

Purina Breed Finder.  Check out this very handy site with questionnaire to research the right dog type for your lifestyle.

Digital Dog.  A wonderful dog site with information about mixed breeds, behavior, training and much more.

Dog Owner's Guide!.   An extensive collection of articles originally published in Dog Owner's Guide, a newspaper for pet and show dog owners. (Cincinnati, Ohio USA by Canis Major Publications.)

American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.  This is the site for the ASPCA, one of the granddaddies of the animal welfare movement.

The Pet Channel.  This site brought to you by TV's The Pet Channel.  Lots of interesting information here.

Canine Public Library.  A terrific resource for all things canine.

PetsWelcome.  Like to travel with your pet but don't always know which hotel or motel allows animals?  This site lets you find out which lodging establishments are "pet friendly."

More Excellent Sites -- Puget Sound Specific

RESCUE EVERY DOG.    Rescue Every Dog’s (R.E.D.) is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization providing community assistance through animal shelter support. R.E.D. saves death row shelter animals, brought to our attention by public animal shelter staff that bonded with the animal’s exceptional personality.  Our mission saves the hearts of the shelter staff and companion animal lives by providing foster, medical, transport, promotion, adoption, education services.  Addition information on Rescue Every Dog may be seen on our website.

WAIF (Whidbey Animals' Improvement Fund).   WAIF rescues homeless and abandoned animals on Whidbey Island in Washington state.

PAWS (Progressive Animal Welfare Society).  Based in Lynwood, Washington, PAWS is creating peaceful coexistence between animals and humans by providing the following services: wildlife rehabilitation; companion animal shelter; and animal advocacy.  A great site with lots of resources.

SODA.  Save Our Dog Areas.  SODA is a non-profit organization formed to provide ongoing support and stewardship for the off-leash dog exercising area at
Marymoor Park in Redmond, Washington.

Hooterville Pets and Safehaus.  Hooterville Pets and Safehaus is a non-profit, charitable organization that takes in homeless pets, provides food, care, medical attention, rehabilitation and shelter until adopted by loving, responsible families.  Hooterville is a no-kill shelter which never euthanizes a healthy, adoptable animal.

Cat Purebreed Rescue (Seattle).  A group whose goal is to reduce the abandonment and surrender to shelters of pedigreed cats through education, identification, rescue, and placement.

A Terrible Beauty.  This article from TIME magazine documents how "an obsessive focus on show-ring looks is crippling, sometimes fatally, America's purebred dogs."  Read this and you'll head straight to the nearest animal shelter to choose your next dog.

Las Vegas Bets on Life.  Program close to reaching zero zero-kill goal.  This June '98 article from the front page of USA Today discusses Las Vegas' radical no-kill citywide initiative.  Article also highlight high-volume spay/neuter programs across the country.  Las Vegas mayor, Jan Jones, is quoted " What Las Vegas is doing now, by breaking the endless cycle of uncontrolled breeding - is the only way to take charge of the situation".
